unlocked cellphone

The reason why I am not getting myself a cellphone for three years of living in America is that it will only adds up to our telephone bills every month. It is no use for me at this moment because I am just staying at home and I am not driving either. So what's the use of possessing a cellphone while my buddies can be contacted through my yahoo messenger?

Once I start driving, I don't know when is that going to happen, I may have to get me an unlocked phone. An unlocked phone is a cell phone that can be used with various GSM-compatible carriers worldwide (a GSM phone requires a SIM card). That means an unlocked cellphone can be used within United States with T-Mobile, Cingular/AT&T, etc., provided the phone supports the frequencies of the service provider.
